The front side of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. On both sides, in circles, there are icons of the Most Holy Theotokos and the Holy Prophet and Baptist of the Lord John the Baptist who worship Christ and pray to Him for the people. This composition is called “deesis”, which means “prayer”. Above is the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands, below is Archangel Michael. People pray in front of these icons for protection from evil forces and ask for help in the spiritual struggle.
