Icons where they are depicted praying to Christ are called deesis, which means “prayer.” On the back is the Great Martyr George the Victorious, one of the most revered saints in the Christian Church. In Rus', he is known as Yuri or Yegor, the patron saint of warriors, an assistant in peasant labor, a protector in troubles, a spiritual assistant in the invisible battle against the forces of evil.
