St. Isaac's Cathedral (the official name is the Cathedral of St. Isaac of Dalmatia) is the largest Orthodox Church in St. Petersburg. It has the status of a museum. It was named in honor of Isaac of Dalmatia, a saint revered by Peter I, since the emperor was born on the saint's commemoration day (May 30). The church was designed by the architect Auguste Montferrand and built in 1818-1858. The construction was personally supervised by Emperor Nicholas I. The opening took place only on May 30 (June 11), 1858 and the church was consecrated as a cathedral.
